Teen Review: The Lightning Thief

The Lightning Thief by MM

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan is a book about a boy names Percy Jackson. Percy has had a lot of trouble in school and has had experiences he can't explain. One day he was in the car with his mom and his friend Grover and they were hit by a big animal. When they go out of the car, this huge creature called a Minotaur, which is half man and half bull, started chasing them. The Minotaur grabbed Percy's mom by the neck and transported her to Hades' palace. This made Percy mad because he thought that his mom had been killed. Percy then went and charged the Minotaur and ended up ripping off his horn and killing it.

After this happened, Percy went to Camp Half-Blood. While Percy was there, he found out that his father was Poseidon, and that his mother was still alive. He was going to go and rescue her. Percy was also convicted of stealing Zeus's lightning bolt. He was given a deadline to get it back to Olympus. Percy knew that it wasn't he who stole it, but he had to find it and return it in time before the Gods got really mad.

Percy ended up going on a quest to save his mother and find and return the lightning bolt to Zeus with his friends Annabeth and Grover. While they were on the quest they encountered many conflicts such as when they had to fight Medusa, when they had to fight the six headed hydra, and when they had to fight Ceberus.

Finally Percy and his friends got to Hades and found out that it wasn't Hades who stole the lightning bolt, but that Hades helm had been stolen. Percy then encountered the God Ares and found out that he had the lightning bolt and the helm. Percy beat Ares and got the helm back to Hades. Hades gave back Percy's mother and Percy gave the lightning bolt back to the Gods of Olympus.

I loved this book because it opened me up to Greek mythology. I also love the rest of the books in the series. I would recommend this book because it is an awesome book that really gets you hooked. You will not want to stop reading!

What's an Appropriate Curfew for High Schoolers?

Parents Magazine, Jan Faull, MEd, on deciding on a high school curfew for teens. My sophomore loves to go to parties with juniors and seniors and to stay out late. What's an appropriate curfew for a sophomore in high school? A.  It's time to put on your power-parenting persona and open up curfew negotiations. There's no need to worry too much, because deep in your teens' heart, he really wants a reasonable and somewhat flexible curfew. When your teen is out with friends, tired and ready to go home -- or just plain not liking the social scene -- it's difficult to say, "I'm tired, I'm going home." It's easier to say, "My curfew is 12:30. I'll be grounded if I'm not home soon." Despite this fact, you need to bear up as your son, like any self-respecting  teenager , will probably moan, stomp, and gripe while claiming, "None of my friends have curfews. You're a control freak." Let your son go on as such, it...
