8 HISPANIC AND LATINE YA AUTHORS YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY READ

Rey Rowland   Sep 15, 2022 With September comes  National Hispanic Heritage Month , which lasts from September 15 to October 15 every year. This celebration aims to commemorate American citizens whose ancestors come from places like Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central/South America. And while I love reading and supporting Latine stories all year, I think this celebration is a great time to discover new authors and books! That’s why today, I want to do a roundup of eight great Hispanic and Latine YA authors that should be on your radar — if they aren’t already. Each year, there are more and more Hispanic and Latine authors who publish YA books. There’s still a ways to go in the publishing industry to share and uplift Latine voices, of course, but I remember looking for Latine books when I was younger and finding next to nothing. So, I’m glad to say things have definitely changed. Either way, know that the authors mentioned here are by no means the  only  ones. There are many mor

12 STANDOUT YA STANDALONE SCI-FI BOOKS

Kate Krug   Sep 21, 2022 Don’t get me wrong — love me a good series. Especially a meaty series. There is something just incredibly satisfying about finishing a series with a good 10+ installments (looking at you, WHEEL OF TIME) and feeling like you are in complete knowledge of a magic system or a group of characters. I love that. I live for that. But there is also something amazing about a story that is contained in 300-some pages but still leaves an incredible impact. I think sometimes we forget that it’s just as much of a challenge to succinctly tell a story that feels satisfying and complete as it is to properly plan a story over several volumes. That’s exactly what this list is, a collection of standalone YA sci-fi novels that have everything: an A+ plot, interesting and well-rounded characters, imaginative worldbuilding, and fantastic writing — all wrapped in a single tome. Of course, the downside to standalones is that there’s always the possibility of wanting more of a story —

STAR WARS BOOKS/SERIES THAT DESERVE THEIR OWN ADAPTATION

Jaime Herndon   Aug 26, 2022 One of the things I love the most about Star Wars is that there are so many stories in the galaxy. There are so many characters, so many stories, and such a rich history available that the possibilities are endless (I’m of the opinion that you can never have too many SW books, shows, or movies). Which makes me wonder why some of the most obvious books/series haven’t been made into TV shows yet. This list focuses on canon books, mainly to avoid confusion. I’d love a Mara Jade TV show, and I’ve heard the rumors about her in Mandalorian season 3 and the rumors about a possible Disney+ Heir to the Empire movie, but forgive me if I’m skeptical. That being said, I would watch the hell out of a TV series based on Legends. Yes, I’m being purposely vague and sweeping: I’d watch any and all of it. I’m behind on my Star Wars book reading and even further behind on my Star Wars comics reading (so many books, not enough hours in the day, and throw in single parenting

TREASURE, TIME TRAVEL, AND TALL TALES: 8 YA BOOKS ABOUT PIRATES

Abigail Clarkin Aug 19, 2022 Captain Hook? Long John Silver? Blackbeard? If any of these names ring a bell, then you know a thing or two about pirates. Growing up, I spent a fair amount of time perusing a coloring book that was all about pirates. Beneath each black and white sketch was a sentence or two about the character pictured. It was in this book that I discovered the existence of famed female pirates like Anne Bonny and Mary Read. Soon after, my younger sister won an award for best scarecrow at a county fair. Her scarecrow? A rather bloodthirsty looking pirate. During the following summers, my cousins and I became obsessed with the  Pirates of the Caribbean  films (particularly  At World’s End’s  soundtrack, along with the idea that one cousin had a crush on Elizabeth Swann). My childhood was filled with all sorts of references to pirates and other seafaring adventurers. So now, I guess it’s no wonder that I still find joy in reading YA books about pirates of all sorts. If you
