Teen Literature Day

As part of American Library Week, today is Teen Literature Day. I thought I'd share some of my favorite teen books and why. In no particular order, here they are:

The Giver by Lois Lowry - though it's a younger read, this is still one of the best science fiction books I've read

Graceling by Kristin Cashore - an amazing fantasy novel with a strong willed and strong heroine.

I am a Genius of Unspeakable Evil and I Want to Be Your Class President by Josh Lieb - laugh out loud funny

Black and White by Paul Volponi - an interesting look at how two boys are treated by the law based on the color of their skin.

Ruins of Gorlan by John Flanagan - a great first book in an awesome fantasy series. I give this to as many people as I can.

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz - a boy spy. Things go boom. How can you go wrong?

Secret Language of Girls by Siobhan Dowd - a wonderful story of how friendships can change over time.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness - heartbreaking and wonderfully illustrated story about grief and loss.

Outsiders by SE Hinton - a classic and must read.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins - I know, it's a favorite of everyone right nw, but Katniss is an extraordinary heroine.

Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson - not an easy read by any means, but an important one for teen girls to read.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - I am an admitted John Green fan, but in my opinion, this one is his best. Hazel and Gus are wonderful characters.

Of course, there are many, many more, but that's just a brief sampling. If you ever need something to read, come find me!

What's an Appropriate Curfew for High Schoolers?

Parents Magazine, Jan Faull, MEd, on deciding on a high school curfew for teens. My sophomore loves to go to parties with juniors and seniors and to stay out late. What's an appropriate curfew for a sophomore in high school? A.  It's time to put on your power-parenting persona and open up curfew negotiations. There's no need to worry too much, because deep in your teens' heart, he really wants a reasonable and somewhat flexible curfew. When your teen is out with friends, tired and ready to go home -- or just plain not liking the social scene -- it's difficult to say, "I'm tired, I'm going home." It's easier to say, "My curfew is 12:30. I'll be grounded if I'm not home soon." Despite this fact, you need to bear up as your son, like any self-respecting  teenager , will probably moan, stomp, and gripe while claiming, "None of my friends have curfews. You're a control freak." Let your son go on as such, it...
